Remote Well Monitoring

With the skyrocketing price of oil and gas, there is a need to constantly monitor and control remote well locations. This includes the process of gathering the resources, tracking the equipment and the ability to remotely control the equipment located almost anywhere. AVIDdirector™ is being used today to help the oil and gas industry go green.

Today, AVIDwireless® can monitor the remote equipment located virtually anywhere and provide customers the ability to gather critical information for preventative maintenance or to help eliminate costly environmental spills. We do this with our intelligent and powerful wireless gateway, AVIDdirector. The controller can monitor all aspects of a well site, ranging from well production levels to the amount of power that production is using.

AVIDdirector serves as the intelligent wireless controller (the gateway) for the remote sensors that collect information from the equipment at the well site and then transmit to the monitoring systems. In addition to collecting the information for reporting and monitoring purposes, the same system provides alerts for out of parameter conditions. This helps to eliminate costly spills or equipment down time. The offending equipment can be shut down remotely or resources can be sent to the location to handle the condition rather than finding the situation in a critical state.

The ability to monitor and control remote locations provides several benefits:

  • Using our AVIDSmartPowerSensor automate meter reading and provide control of all types of high
    power usage systems
  • Fewer Resources Required to Maintain/Monitor Well Sites
  • Prevent Costly Hazardous Spills Before They Happen to Maintain a Green Environment
  • Track Equipment Moving In and Out of the Well Site
  • Minimize Equipment Down Time
  • Ability to Remotely Control/Shut Down Equipment from Anywhere
  • Receive Alerts for Custom Defined Conditions via Email or SMS

How the Process Works

  1. Various equipment located on and around the site is attached to the AVIDdirector (either directly or using wireless sensors). These might include such sensors as RFID readers for tracking, pressure, sound or temperature sensors, etc..
  2. AVIDdirector reviews the information gathered from the equipment and determines what information is important based on custom parameters set by the user.
  3. AVIDdirector, which has been configured with the appropriate radio for the area (if within cellular range GPRS, GSM, iDen, or CDMA, if not then satellite could be used), transmits the information to the monitoring systems.
  4. The information gathered from the equipment, which has been securely configured specifically for the back-end system, is carried over the carrier's data network, through the Internet, and is accepted by the back-end system and stored in a database.

  1. The back-end system provides various reports, configured specifically for oil and gas well monitoring. These reports are available to authorized users.
  2. Should the data be outside specific parameters, alerts are sent from the back-end system to the appropriate personnel via email and/or SMS. RFID is used to notify of unauthorized personnel or equipment entering or leaving the area.
